Meet Kristina Rei, the woman who now has the world’s biggest lips.

She’s only 22 and has spent £4,000 on lip injections in the hopes of resembling her favourite film heroine, Jessica Rabbit.

The nail technician from St. Petersburg, Russia was convinced her thin lips were ugly, so she opted to get a lip job – 100 of them - and aims to make her enormous pout even bigger!

Dr Yannis Alexandrides M.D. F.A.C.S. attended the latest symposium of Cosmetic surgery held in Miami. Florida, Feb10th-12th 2011.

This is one of the top global meetings for live plastic surgery where new techniques from the aesthetic medical elite are demonstrated.

Attending surgeons are able to witness treatments and engage in interactive discussion as the surgery is being conducted, this allows them to gain a full understanding of the procedure and the surgical techniques involved.

The latest advances this year that are to be offered to patients of Dr Alexandrides are:

  • Stem cell face lift
  • Fat injection for breast enlargement.
  • Improved ways for liposuction for superior results

I have heard there is a new arm lift procedure which only leaves scars under the armpit not down the arm itself? Can you tell me anything more about this procedure?

Conventional arm lift incisions extend from the armpit to the elbow and this can put some women off having surgery, however the scars are usually very thin and, when the healing process is complete (anything up to two years), become virtually unnoticeable.

I always ensure that women seeking this surgery are fully aware of the scarring risks as they need to be fully prepared before the procedure.

The mini-arm lift is a lesser invasive option which I usually combine with advanced laser lipolysis (fat removal), but not every patient is a good candidate. This surgery works best on younger women (40s to early 50s) with reasonable skin quality who don't have large volumes of arm fat.

The procedure forms the shape of a ‘T' with a horizontal cut in the armpit with a short vertical incision in the upper part of the underarm. Laser fat removal enables me to sculpt the underarm removing pockets of unwanted fat producing a natural contour. The beauty of the advanced laser system is the degree of skin tightening it offers - vital to a good result when treating batwings.

“Plastic surgeons are constantly looking for ways to reduce scarring, and most procedures now involve minimal access techniques with incisions being concealed as much as possible. Modern day technological advances have helped in our quest for great results with minimal scarring, for example the endoscope has become an invaluable tool used by most surgeons especially in brow and face surgery.

However no matter how small or discreet the incision, there is no escaping the fact that every time we cut the skin a scar is produced which for most (the lucky ones) in time becomes a thin, almost unrecognisable white line. Those of you with a propensity for keloid scarring aren’t as lucky as scars can thicken and become raised (hypertrophy).

As a plastic surgeon I am always interested in new scar treatment theories and welcome the news that something as affordable and easily accessible as insulin might be able to help reduce this age old problem. It seems staff at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead are about to commence a study involving around 75 women which, when completed, will offer significant data on the efficacy of insulin in scar healing. I’ll be very interested to look at the results when the study ends.

Finger’s crossed!”

Paul Darroch suffers from a rare condition which causes his chest to cave in on one side. here he tells Caroline Reid why he opted for surgery

Two weeks lazing around the pool of a luxury hotel in the Indian Ocean is most people's idea of heaven but for 24 year-old Paul Darroch it was his worst nightmare. As fellow holidaymakers stripped to soak up the sun, Paul perched under a parasol wearing a baggy shirt, his arms folded across his chest.

"I did get some funny looks," he says. "However, it was nothing compared to the stares I would have had if I'd taken my top off."

New to the UK - Thermafrax – tighten your belt with the Hollywood no-knife mini tummy tuck

London 16th March 2009

Reduced cost, reduced inches and reduced recovery, the new age Thermage® and Fraxel® combo brings about effective belly skin tightening without a scar. The effects are quickly visible with further improvement over time and with no cuts, downtime, bruising or swelling this treatment is fast becoming the celeb’s favourite.

What is Thermafrax?

Straight from the US the proven skin rejuvenation benefits of Thermage® and Fraxel® are combined to give superior results. Thermage tightens loose skin and reduces girth circumference while Fraxel® causes extra skin tightening and also shrinks unsightly stretch marks - double skin tightening effects at different levels of the dermis.

Are results instant?

Best results are experienced by those with minor skin sagging. The great news is that instant improvements just get better and better over the next few months so you will look increasingly (and naturally) lean, toned and sleek with improved skin texture and elasticity. Start now and look great in that bikini this summer! Thermafrax is the ideal choice for most women who have loose abdominal skin without large fat pockets.

Leading Plastic Surgeon, Dr Yannis Alexandrides of 111 Harley Street has been using Thermafrax for some time at his US practice and believes women throughout the UK will love it: “A great number of women would like tummy tuck surgery but are wary for many reasons. Thermafrax is an effective alternative offering a cost effective, safe and non-invasive choice that works.”

How does it work?

Thermage uses Radio Frequency energy to heat the lower layers of the deep dermis causing a controlled thermal healing response.  This triggers high quality collagen production: the end result being a tighter more toned appearance to the skin

Fraxel benefits the upper and mid levels of the tissue.  When passed over the skin it causes microscopic ‘thermal zones’ of heat. This triggers a healing response in the upper layers of the tissue reducing unsightly stretch marks and evening the surface of the tissue.

Number of treatments and cost

One thermage treatment should be enough and two to five fraxel treatments will be required spaced two weeks apart. Cost for Thermafrax Combo typically consists of six treatments in total: package cost £4500.00.

Blending good practice with state-of-the-art technology the highly qualified, experienced surgeons and aesthetic nurses have made this high end, discreet London clinic the ‘one-stop-shop’ option for discerning women – and men.

The role of collagen in skin youthfulness

The degree of collagen in the dermal layer decreases with age resulting in skin’s inability to ‘bounce back’ or retract after stretching (weight gain and losses, pregnancy). Most anti-ageing/skin rejuvenation procedures involve stimulation of natural collagen production as increased levels of collagen give the skin more elasticity.

Thermage has changed for the better

New generation Thermacool Thermage’s enhanced technology and NTX delivery system has made treatments faster and practically painless with a greater degree of skin tightening. The updated tips use less radio frequency energy (less discomfort) and penetrate more deeply into the dermis and the increased number of recommended ‘passes’ has enhanced efficacy. Heat production in turn stimulates collagen growth which tightens slack skin.

Fraxel’s role

* Non-ablative Fraxel causes collagen production but targets the mid-level skin dermis and also has a ‘re-surfacing’ effect on the skin.

* Skin tightening is double enhanced when used in conjunction with Thermage. Fraxel also helps diminish stretch marks and any areas of skin discolouration.

The Fraxel Laser hits the skin in ‘fractions’ - targeting the deeper tissue in microscopic segments, the parts left untouched speed up healing and collagen stimulation is accelerated. An added benefit of the ‘fractional laser’ is the absence of downtime – no more scalded appearance

*Non-ablative – no thermal damage to surface of the skin

ThermaFrax is very safe. No incisions and no peeling of top skin layers means there is a reduced chance of infection and complications. In addition, the non-ablative nature of the treatments allows for faster, more comfortable healing compared to traditional methods.

Fat reduction – thermage will have some effect on fat pockets but is not a substitute for more conventional fat specific removal systems.
