While acne often does affect the face – causing a red and raised complexion, it can also appear all over the body. It is commonly seen on the back, chest, arms and buttocks. Acne blemishes also range in size, type and severity too. Some people are more prone to cystic spots, papules, whiteheads, blackheads, but also small lumps, known as nodules. The most severe type of acne blemishes are cysts, which are often tender to the touch and prone to scarring.
Completely untrue, acne is caused by an overproduction of sebum (oil) in the sebaceous glands which are responsible for keeping the skin lubricated. When the glands become overactive, the sebum produced reaches an abnormal level which changes the function of the usually harmless skin bacterium, called P. acnes, to become aggressive. This leads to pore blockages which then causes inflammation and breakouts experienced during acne episodes. If anything, acne sufferers often have vigilant skincare routines to help offset any initial symptoms.
