Think of Laser Hair Removal and it conjures up the smell of burning, a fair amount of pain and occasionally even lasting white pigment. Thankfully with the category has seen a surge of new interest after more forgiving technologies have come to market.

In the past, laser hair removal has been predominately performed with an IPL (intense pulsed light) machine. However recent innovations have made this technology outdated, which is why 111 Harley St. uses the gold standard for laser hair removal – laser itself.

Laser, or light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, works by emitting a wavelength of high energy light that is converted into heat. This then damages a specific area, working by a process of photothermolysis.

In the case of hair, this means the Laser picks up on the melanin within the hair, heating up and destroying the hair root. This will eventually be pushed out by the body over the next 7-10 days.

Where Intense Pulsed Light uses scattered light in multiple wavelengths and requires 8-12 treatments (on average) to fully diminish hair in a particular region, Laser uses a more precise and specific collimated light with one wavelength. This makes it a superior technology for hair removal and one that is more friendly to all skin types, requiring only 6-8 treatments that yield stronger results.

There are two forms of laser hair removal we offer.

1. The Alexandrite Laser is ideal for skin types that sit between 1-3 on the Fitzpatrick scale, meaning white, beige and slightly tan. This is the stronger laser of the two, with higher absorption of melanin that means it can target very fine hair.

2. The Nd YAG Laser can be used on all skin types from 1 through 6 as it is less sensitive to melanin in the skin, meaning it is ideal for darker skin tones.

As with everything we do at 111 Harley St., we customise all Laser Hair Removal treatments depending on the patient. Following a thorough consultation and patch test, a course will be prescribed and guidelines for homecare (such as not to pluck, wax or tweeze) will be communicated.

How often should I have Laser Hair Removal

Frequency

This differs depending on the area treated due to the different cycles of hair and their varying thicknesses.

Face – Every 4 weeks

Body – Every 6-8 Weeks

Post-Treatment

After the treatment, there is minimal redness and irritation which should entirely disappear in 24 hours. SPF should be applied as usual but all patients can resume daily activities, save intensive sport.
