This is a common question asked by our patients which is why it’s useful to outline the eyes ageing process.
Upper and lower eyelid skin is notoriously thin which is why it wrinkles, sags, and darkens more prominently over time. There are many things that can speed up the ageing of the eyes, and the lack of collagen produced over time is only one of them. It has been studied that collagen starts to decrease when you reach 30, with 1% of collagen lost every year after that. This is because there is a reduction in the number of fibroblasts that synthesise collagen which support and keep the skin supple – when this declines, laxity and the formation of wrinkles is the visible effect.
There are four factors that can cause the eyes to age faster, the most common one is chronological ageing, then there’s photo-ageing, hormonal deficiencies, and environmental factors.
There are some natural ways to slow down the ageing process and these are avoiding extreme sun exposure and pollution that can cause photo-ageing and free radicals damage that can influence cell turnover, systematic agents to reduce the impact of hormonal changes on the body like HRTs, topical skincare and an improvement to lifestyle and habits – such as not smoking, increasing exercise, and decreasing stress.
Although ageing is the most natural process in the world, our patients have kept the more advanced signs of ageing at bay with the help of our minimally invasive treatments and anti-ageing procedures – which is a very effective way to anti-age the eyes.
The main things to look for to see if your eyes are ageing are:
A minor surgical procedure to target droopy eyelids – whether they’re inhibiting your view or making you look more haggard, is Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids.
How it works
Dr Yannis will make a small incision in the natural crease of the eyelid so any scarring will be imperceptible. He will remove the excess skin causing the laxity issues and delicately restitch the skin together – Dr Yannis is often complimented on his intricate stitching.
Our go-to eye tightening treatment is Thermage.
Thermage FLX is one of our most popular non-surgical treatments and our expert Aestheticians can safely treat around the eyes for Brow Lift-like results. Using Thermage’s Eye Tip, tiny but powerful radio waves are absorbed into the skin, for eye-opening results.
How it works
Once the radio waves have penetrated down to the subcutaneous layers of the skin – causing an exothermic thermic reaction – the skin around the eye immediately contracts. Although this effect is temporary, the real power of Thermage can be seen in the weeks following where new collagen is produced for a firmer, sustained lift.
Anti-wrinkle injections and injectables all together, are another way to anti-age the eye area, they’re a tried and tested way to soften any crow’s feet alongside any other wrinkles that appear around the eyes, such as frown lines.
How it works
Our Harley Street Botox® treatment works because, when injected, the botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the chemical release of the primary neurotransmitter involved in muscle movement called acetylcholine. This results in the softening of static and dynamic wrinkles to leave you looking fresher.
